This still-life, Freshly-Poured Freedom, was my own composition that I tackled through oil painting. To start it off, I chose a still life already set up in the classroom along with a plastic plane, then stacked several items on the left side so the small pitcher would lean against the bigger pitcher, which would hold the plastic plane. From there, I put down a thin wash to place the items on the canvas paper, and added more and more detail as I worked, starting with the basic colors and eventually adding the shadows, textures, and spots of light.

In order to convey the idea that there is no true freedom in society, I took a normal kitchen scene and morphed it to take on an absurd appearance. The background is pleasantly colorful and feels light and fresh, while the foreground seems the same at first glance, but holds a deeper meaning. The pitchers represent government and societal norms, which play with our freedom—in the form of the plane at the right side of the picture—and give nothing back. The plane is unnamed and hardly appears to be able to fly, like citizens of a government.
