Nina Keizer - "Madonna of the Hive"

High School: Lawrence Free State High School

Art Instructor: Carolyn Berry

The scene depicted in the center of this piece was painted with oil, on a gessoed wooden board. I then measured the painting, and cut a frame to place on top of it out of drawing paper. To give the frame a burnished look, I first painted the frame with gold acrylic. Once it was dry I applied burnt umber, rubbing it away as it dried to give texture. Then I glued found objects in a pattern to give the effect of ornamentation found on many religious artifacts. I then added the triptych on the lower half of this piece using oil paint.

I chose this piece for representation because it’s very distinctive and unusual. Religious subjects have often been depicted in art throughout history, but my piece takes a typical religious scene and parodies it by using bee imagery. It is an unusual representation of a familiar scene, which makes it fresh and interesting, and even a little controversial.
