Luci Swim - "Self - #17"

High School: Lawrence Marysville High School

Art Instructor: April Spicer

I used encaustic wax to build up layers of texture in this piece. I collaged together a lot of different papers to get a sense of depth and included ephemera from my life, such as newspaper clippings, fortune cookie fortunes, a gum wrapper and a scrap of my handwriting. I painted with the waxes, carved into it, used screen to texture it and melted it away for effect. I hand drew the face on tissue paper and sealed it with a thin layer of clear wax.

This year, I wanted to do a lot of self-portraits, because it is something I’ve never really tried. I wanted to create a self-portrait that showed something of past and present, while I looked toward the future. I chose to symbolize my history through my hair flowing behind me and the objects woven through it, while my face is clear of layers, looking to the future.
