Kaitlyn Robl - "Heartland Harvest"

High School: Ellinwood High School

Art Instructor: Greg Maxwell

This drawing is a charcoal drawing utilizing both black charcoal and white media on heavyweight paper. I used various shading and textural techniques to create atmospheric, spacial and agricultural representations. I experimented extensively in developing layering techniques to recreate the look of the wheat stubble. The intentional use of high contrast in both value and texture gives the image a very strong visual representation of the Kansas landscape.

While I have multiple images to choose from for a contest of this caliber and theme, I chose this particular image for the simple fact it truly speaks to some of the very images and conditions that the state of Kansas is so well known for across the state. After much thought, I chose this image over a drawing depicting a storm over a country road that I completed earlier this fall. Being a Kansas native, this kind of scene has become an integral part of my life. I cannot imagine living anywhere else where the opportunity of this view would not present itself on a yearly basis. I feel it is a great depiction of the beauty and strength of our state.
