Ian Patterson - "Hallow Veins"

WINNER

High School: Lawrence Free State High School

Art Instructor: Carolyn Berry

The origin of this piece began with a mixed media piece I had made previously. The original piece was lacking in many spots artistically which is why I decided it would make a good digital imaging piece. The biggest way I changed this was simply added a new idea with the old idea. Because the original piece was lacking so much contrast, I played around a lot with that on the computer and even exaggerated in many parts. This worked very well actually and my idea got through the way I wanted it to.

The first way this piece looked was with a steel hearted monster of veins sprouting from a suit of gold with a golden heart. The piece said that if we had replaced our fragile (soft as gold) hearts with a more durable one that we would lose a side to our humanity in the process. I then interpreted into this piece that the heart was a “hallow organ”. Since I didn’t want more hearts, I worked in the idea of bones which are hallow in all dead things and based everything in my piece off the look of a skeleton.
