Aleksander Eskilson - "Warmth and Nostalgia"

High School: Shawnee Heights High School

Art Instructor: Wendy Wheeler

This image of a Crosley 1936 radio vacuum tube was taken with an f-stop of 5.4 and a shutter speed of 1/30 with a Cannon 55mm lens. A technique of juxtaposition was employed to create depth between the foreground and background. Repetition is created with successive vertical lines, and the line of tubes ascending to the horizon. A 12 volt power supply was selectively wired to the foremost tube to light the filament. This, low light shadows at the base of the photo, and small depth of field draw attention to this tube as the unique subject.

The photograph was selected for its composition and mood. Technology today has left the vacuum tube far behind. But some still prefer the warm sound of a vacuum tube guitar amplifier, for example. The glow of the tube filament, and the low brown hues provide a similar feeling of warmth. The feeling of the photograph is ultimately nostalgic - the blurring line of tubes almost feels like a memory stretching back through time. We remember a simpler past with a certain incorruptible fondness. I personally, find such 'retro' or 'aging' subjects particularly intriguing and enjoyable to photograph.
